Known for its smooth, distinct flavor, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey has fueled the rebellious spirit of rock 'n' roll for decades. But the classic Old No. 7 isn’t just celebrated for its quality—it’s a symbol of defiance and authenticity, embodying a rich heritage that resonates with whiskey lovers and iconic celebrities alike, helping it cement its place among the most legendary spirits in the world.
At
Big Bear Wine & Liquor
in Pueblo, CO, we’re proud to carry a selection of this celebrated whiskey. From the classic Old No. 7 to the smooth Tennessee Honey, we’ve got something for every whiskey lover. Visit us at our Pueblo locations to explore our selection.
The History of Jack Daniel’s
Jack Daniel’s was founded in 1866 by Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniel in the small town of Lynchburg, Tennessee. It became the first registered distillery in the U.S. Jack Daniel was known for his attention to detail, and one of his key innovations was the charcoal mellowing process, where the whiskey is filtered through sugar maple charcoal before aging. This gives Jack Daniel’s its famously smooth flavor. By 1904, Jack Daniel’s whiskey had already made its mark, winning a gold medal at the World’s Fair in St. Louis, which helped grow its reputation both nationally and internationally.
After Jack Daniel’s death in 1911, his nephew Lem Motlow took over the distillery. The brand survived the difficult years of Prohibition (1920-1933), when whiskey production was banned, and quickly regained its momentum afterward. Over time, the whiskey became a symbol of American quality and craftsmanship, embraced by musicians, cultural icons, and whiskey lovers around the world. Today, the distillery still operates out of Lynchburg, producing not just the classic Old No. 7 but also new variations like Tennessee Honey and Gentleman Jack, continuing a legacy that’s more than 150 years old.
How Is Jack Daniel’s Whiskey Made?
Jack Daniel’s whiskey is renowned for its smooth flavor and distinctive character, largely due to its unique production methods. Here’s a step-by-step guide to how Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey is produced:
1. Charcoal Mellowing (Lincoln County Process)
The journey of Jack Daniel’s whiskey begins with the Lincoln County Process. This involves filtering the whiskey through sugar maple charcoal before it enters the barrels for aging. This method, unique to Jack Daniel’s, helps in creating a smoother, more refined flavor by removing harsh impurities and unwanted flavors.
2. Aging in Unique Barrels
Once the whiskey has been charcoal-mellowed, it is aged in custom-made barrels. Jack Daniel’s uses new, handcrafted barrels made from American oak, which impart distinctive vanilla and caramel notes to the whiskey. The aging process allows the whiskey to develop its rich character and smoothness, with each barrel contributing unique flavors to the final product.
3. Distillation Process
Jack Daniel’s whiskey is distilled in copper stills, a traditional method that helps retain the purity of the whiskey. The careful control of the distillation process ensures that the whiskey maintains its consistency and high quality. The use of high-quality ingredients and meticulous attention to detail at this stage contribute to the signature taste of Jack Daniel’s.
4. Maturation and Blending
After aging, the whiskey is carefully blended to achieve the desired flavor profile. Jack Daniel’s master blenders meticulously select and combine different barrels to create the perfect balance of flavors. This step is crucial in ensuring that every Jack Daniel’s whiskey bottle delivers the same exceptional quality and taste.
Jack Daniel’s Whiskey Price and Varieties
A bottle of Jack Daniel’s whiskey costs between $14-$26, depending on the variant that you choose. Because when it comes to Jack Daniel’s, there’s more than just the classic Old No. 7. The brand offers a variety of whiskeys, each with its own unique flavor profile and appeal. Whether you're looking for something to sip slowly or a whiskey that blends perfectly into a cocktail, there’s a Jack Daniel’s variant for you.
1. jack daniel’s old no. 7 tennessee whiskey
The original that started it all, Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 is the brand’s flagship product. Known for its smooth, full-bodied flavor with notes of vanilla, caramel, and a hint of charcoal, this whiskey is perfect for sipping straight or mixing into classic cocktails like a Jack and Coke or an Old Fashioned.
2. jack daniel’s tennessee honey whiskey
If you’re looking for something a little sweeter, this Jack Daniel’s honey whiskey is the perfect option. This whiskey is a blend of Jack Daniel’s classic Tennessee whiskey and honey liqueur, giving it a smooth, sweet flavor with hints of caramel and spice. It's a great choice for those who enjoy a lighter, more approachable whiskey, and it pairs perfectly with lemonade for a refreshing summer cocktail.
3. gentleman jack daniel’s whiskey
For those seeking a more refined whiskey experience, Gentleman Jack offers a double-mellowed option that’s exceptionally smooth. Unlike Old No. 7, Gentleman Jack is charcoal mellowed twice—once before aging and once after—giving it an extra layer of smoothness and complexity. Its rich flavor profile, featuring notes of caramel, vanilla, and a light oak finish, makes it ideal for sipping neat or over ice.
